Circuit Boards
Business managers expanding phone systems often find themselves in holes they’ve dug for themselves by not planning adequately, holes that are very difficult and expensive to dig themselves out of.
If you are planning to expand your phone system you’ll save yourself time, regrets, and regret if you take into account some of the planning factors below.
- Phone System Components — All PBX systems and all key phone systems are made up with a cabinet containing electronic components such as printed circuit boards (PCB’s) and circuits on these boards needed to operate the system’s phones and other functions. You need one of these circuits for each telephone and each telephone line used in your system. And since these circuits reside on PCB’s, if you’re going to expand your system you’ll need to know how many PCB’s you’ll need in it.
- System Cabinet – These cabinets contain slots which each hold a PCB. Some of these slots are universal. That is, they can hold either a station PCB, used by a system telephone, or a C.O. Line PCB used by telephone lines. If you buy a cabinet (or Key Service Unit (KSU) which has too few slots, you may find yourself limited in the quantity of PCB’s–or circuits–you’ll be able to use in your system. If you buy a cabinet that is larger than you need, you’ll be shelling out money that may be unnecessary. So, you’[ll need to know how many slots–and what kind–your new cabinet will hold.
- Digital Station PCB’s – One circuit is required for each digital system station (telephone). There are various PCB sizes. Some provide for 8 circuits, some for 16. Since both 16-circuit PCB’s and 8-circuit PCB’s takes up one cabinet slot, and if you need more than 8 stations it will probably make sense to buy one 16-circuit PCB, rather than two 8-circuit PCB’s.
- Analog Station PCB’s — These circuit boards, in most respects, are like the Digital Station PCB’s. The exception is that they provide functionality to analog phones, including cordless phones, and also to analog ancillary equipment such as fax machines, credit card machines, etc.
- Universal Station PCB’s — Some phone systems provide for universal PCB’s whose circuits work with either digital or analog phones. However, these PCB’s often work with 4-conductor station wiring while analog or digital PCB’s require only 2-conductor wiring. So, if your system equipment will allow you to use universal PCB’s, be sure to determine before ordering them which wiring your system uses.
- C.O. (Central Office) PCB’s — These circuit boards provide for telephone line functions such as Call Hold, Ring, Conferencing, LED Blink, etc. If you are adding telephone lines to your expanded system you’ll need to order these boards.
- System Wall Space — Some systems are expanded by using by adding an expansion cabinet to their existing main cabinet. Other systems expand by replacing your system cabinet with a larger one. In either case you’ll very likely need more wall space if your existing phone system cabinet doesn’t have enough slots to accommodate needed expansion PCB’s. If you don’t have sufficient wall space to add these larger cabinets you will most likely need to move your phone equipment to a space that does provide adequate room. This could be quite costly because your station wiring will be terminated at the original system location and would require that you install feeder cables between the new and old equipment locations..
So, now that you can better understand factors that are involved in expanding your phone system, you will hopefully also understand that proceeding with the purchase of new phone equipment without first knowing about characteristics of your phone system cabinet and circuit boards could be a costly mistake. If you feel unprepared to decide which equipment to order, your best bet may be to find yourself an independent ad visor who is telecom savvy and won’t sell you equipment you don’t need.
