We have all had the experience of being around people who have ‘entitlement issues’ haven’t we? You know the kind: they feel the world/job/person owes them. They are also bottomless holes when it comes to paybacks. They never believe they have been paid what they deserve, no matter how much it is. Have you ever wondered what is up with those people?
In a nutshell (appropriate choice for this discussion), they are nuts. They are actually mentally retarded; most likely due to the way they were raised. They have experienced nurturing that either wasn’t so nurturing or was too much so. The spoiled brat persona is pretty easy to recognize but the resentful employee with entitlement issues is not so easy to ferret out. They are both opposite sides of the same coin however, with the brat being obvious and the resentful one being very sneaky…and dangerous.
The dangers of the resentful employee, spouse, student, or church-goer can span the range from malicious rumors all the way to violent physical harm-and even death. But make no mistake about it-these people are insane. If you doubt that, just try reasoning with them. The rational person gets nowhere with such a person, because they are not rational. They truly cannot understand fairness, honor or duty, other than feeling that they themselves deserve a huge helping of such things.
They are not exactly sociopathic or psychopathic, because they are capable of feeling remorse and compassion for others. It’s more a case of being greedy and unaware of their true contribution. Maybe we should coin a new phrase for such people, like putrid bratipathic, or clueless grabipathic. They definitely could use some schooling in proper public interactions-Work Ethic 101 would be a good start.
In this time of record numbers of unemployed, it would seem to be common sense for such people to realize they should be happy they have a job. Instead, they bitch, moan and complain endlessly about having to actually perform the work they were hired for. When someone with a good work ethic enters the picture, those putrid bratipathics start up the old sabotage routine, doing everything in their power to get rid of the person–who shows them up by actually working.
The labor unions are adding to this unacceptable behavior by molly-coddling such bratipaths, allowing them to file endless-anonymous–complaints against their victims. This takes up precious time in a useless investigation that usually turns out to be without merit. Of course, since the complaints are anonymous, the complainer cannot be disciplined. Meanwhile, the victim of such vindictive behavior quits due to being harassed beyond all reason.
Isn’t it about time that decent people took a stand against such venomous attacks? When coworkers see the bratipath attacking someone, they should all step up and stop it (grow a pair, people). Remember that old adage from Edmund Burke: “The only thing needed for evil to prosper is for good men to do nothing.” Speak up when the bratipath starts the harassment. And by the way, if you go after the bully first, the rest of the followers fall pretty easily.
So rather than just shaking your head and being glad you aren’t the target, do something about it. When you call out the bratipath on their improper behavior, they get embarrassed enough that they might actually start to learn how to behave in polite society. If they don’t, and the harassment escalates, show them it will not be tolerated, by whatever means is necessary to get the point across.
Some people might think I am advocating taking the ‘law’ into our own hands. Well, if the ‘law’ is unjust and unresponsive, it is our Right and our duty to do so. If peaceful means are not enough, then perhaps we need to return to our frontier ways, where “an armed society is a polite society”. And, for those who live in the state where they put you in jail for defending your life in your own house, I suggest you either throw out those evil idiots who made such laws, or move to a state where the lawmakers are of a more sane and balanced temperament.
The lack of involvement that has been practiced by too many people in our society has resulted in the political mess that our country is in now. Our forebears, brave, smart and compassionate, have given way to a nation of cowards who “don’t want to get involved”. Workplace politics are the micro-version of our nation. You only have to look around at your workplace to understand how devastating the results can be.
