There are thousands of coins being sold on eBay every day and many are sold by professional coin dealers who own expensive and rare coins. Others are sold by amateurs who don’t always know what their selling and a small proportion are sold by unscrupulous dealers looking to con buyers out of money.

A question posed by many coin collectors and collectors in general is how can I buy on eBay without getting ripped off? The truth is you don’t have to be a professional at what you collect to avoid becoming a victim of bad sellers. You just need to know what tricks people use to con you and how to make the best use of the information available. The following guidelines are useful to anyone considering purchasing old and valuable products on eBay.

Feedback Score

Just because a seller has a high feedback score does not mean he is an honest dealer or knows anything about what he’s selling. Don’t just look at the feedback score but also take a look at what the seller has sold in the past. If your buying coins the seller may be a one time coin dealer who has sold products unrelated to coins in the past or is trying out eBay to sell their inherited collection. While they may not be dishonest coin dealers an amateur may not know he is selling a counterfeit coin or may misidentify or over-grade a coin resulting in you being overcharged. Ensure that they have a long history of selling coins particularly the type of coins you are considering purchasing. While they may be experts in bullion coins they may know little about ancient coins and their values.

Positive Feedback Comments

Positive feedback can be very useful but only if you know how to read behind the lines. People are generally reluctant to leave negative feedback so they will leave underlying negative comments in the positive feedback. Look out for comments such as “over-graded coin but still a bargain” or “item arrived quickly but not what I was expecting” or”good buy but not like picture”. While the seller may have hundreds of positive ratings dig a little deeper and you may find that not all of the comments are positive.

Shipping Cost

You may think you got a bargain until you realize you have been overcharged for shipping. Many sellers will list their items cheap to attract buyers but make their real money from the shipping. Sellers may charge $8.00 for postage and packing and $5.00 for the coin. Also make sure the dealer does not just ship UPS otherwise a significant cost will be added to you.

Return Policy

When purchasing anything costly on eBay make sure you read the small print and their returns policy. The returns policy can differ drastically from seller to seller. While one seller may offer no return for unsatisfied buyers another may offer a full return. Also others may refund you for the coin but not reimburse you for the postage and packing.

Wrong Grade

Many dealers who do not have their coins graded by a professional grading service will grade the coins themselves. It is tempting for them to overgrade their coin claiming that it appears like a MS-66 when it is actually a MS-65 or MS-64. It is particularly easy to con you if they do not have a clear photograph of the coin in question. If you are worried about purchasing a coin that has been over-graded consider only purchasing one that has been graded and slabbed by a professional coin grading service. Not all coin grading services are created equal. Some will overgrade a coin. The most popular and professional top four grading services are the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), Independent Coin Grading Company (ICG), Numismatic Guaranty Corporation of America (NGC) and the American Numismatic Association Certification Service (ANACS)

Photos

Clear photos are a must when purchasing coins on eBay. The photos should show both the observe and reverse of the coin. Don’t be fooled by photos that are out of focus designed to obscure scratches or marks on the coin that could significantly reduce its value.

The key points to keep in mind when buying on eBay is to proceed with caution. Don’t just check out their negative feedback but read the positive feedback while reading between the lines. Carefully read the item description and small print. Also ensure that the seller provides adequate and sufficient information and photos before purchasing and that they respond quickly to questions.
