This is easy. Most beginning collectors seem to stay with the coins that they can easily identify and that are in common use.
Actually, the 4 most desired gold or silver coins are:
1. The US Eagle
2. The Canadian Maple Leaf
3. The Chinese Panda
4. The Australian Koala
These coins are minted in gold or silver. Also, these coins are government minted and therefore backed by the government issuing the coin. In the case of gold coins, each coin will have 99.9% pure content of the gold. Of course, if you are purchasing a silver coin, then it will be 99.9% silver. The most popular size is the 1 oz size. Although many do have smaller ones available, the most popular is the 1 oz. The most popular years are what is called recent issue or modern issue. They are readily accessible, fairly easy to find and simple to store.
Although beginners tend to start with new coins from a bank, a better choice is to look for real collector coins. New bank coins although they may be new are not real collector coins. They come with marks and scratches that collectors do not want on their coins. Collectors want coins that are in perfect or near perfect condition. These collector ones can be found with a rating and certification by a reputable rating agency like ANACS, NGC or PCGS.
The most desired coin for a collector would be a MS70 coin. These are considered “perfect condition”. To keep them their perfect condition it would be best to have them in a protected cover within a coin collector case, and then placed in a home safe or a bank safe deposit box. As your collection grows, the overall value will grow as well. Especially if you start collecting the similar coins in each year that they are minted, the “set” will have a greater value collectively than just one coin.
