Fraxel Repair laser treatment uses a high-intensity carbon dioxide (CO2) laser to treat skin. But unlike other ablative procedures, it uses fractional technology to achieve cosmetic results while lessening recovery time. Fraxel repair treatment uses thousands of microscopic laser columns to penetrate deep into the skin and remove old, damaged skin cells. This stimulates the skin’s own natural healing process, which replaces the cells with new skin and new collagen. In this manner the skin can be rejuvenated to reduce wrinkles, sun spots, and wrinkles. In addition, skin tightening and acne scar improvements are also seen in higher treatment settings. In the highest treatment settings, pre-cancerous lesions can be also be removed.

Fraxel repair laser has received FDA clearance for many indications on and off the face, including:

Recovery can vary depending on the patient’s skin type and treatment settings used. Depending on the level of treatment, the procedure takes 20 minutes for a full face, with most men and women returning to routine activities in 3 to 9 days – depending again on treatment depth.
Depending upon the aggressiveness of the treatment, there might be some pinpoint bleeding following the procedure, as well as some oozing for up to 48 hours until the wounds close up. The most common side effects are edema (swelling), which usually subsides after a week, and erythema (redness), which may last up to a month, depending on the aggressiveness of treatment. Other temporary side effects may include minor itching, dry skin, peeling or flaking, oozing and crusting.
Immediately after treatment occlusive ointment like Aquaphor is placed on the skin for 2-3 days. Once healing is completed, patient should wear sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, avoid direct sun exposure for at least 3 months after last treatment, and wear a wide-brimmed hat when in the sun.
The results of Fraxel repair treatment are both immediate and progressive. Soon after the treatment, the surface of the skin looks softer, looks brighter with more even skin tone. The next 3 to 6 months after treatment healing processes in the deeper skin layers result in continued improvement in skin appearance.
With the need for little down-time, and optimal results are demanded by patients. Many patients in Los Angeles are also tanned or of darker skin types. Our experience has been that with the proper laser settings, proper pre-laser treatment and post-laser precautions that most patients (Fitzpatrick skin types I-III, and selected type IV) can be safely treated without skin pigmentary issues. For instance, in varying the two main variable: coverage versus treatment depth, coverage is reduced in our patients with olive skin.
With careful selection of treatment settings, remarkable skin rejuvenation results can be achieved with this fractionated laser.
