Silver Ore

As the study of green power continues, Geothermal Energy endures as one of the simplest ideas that has actually been in use for hundreds of years. It has many uses, including, of course, farming. For years, farmers have used Geothermal Energy to heat their greenhouses. Italian farmers have used it for hundreds of years to water their fields. They’ve been able to grow vegetables year-round, because the hot water keeps the tender plants from freezing. As well, Hungary has been using this type of energy for a very long time.

Let’s take the confusion away from Geothermal Energy, and break it down into relatively simple principles. Consider this: Water is the most abundant resource on the planet. When it is heated, the energy produced works in different ways. Geothermal Energy is simply the energy that comes from heating and using hot water. As I said previously, this is nothing new, but it has become more popular in recent years due to the increasing demand for green and renewable power.

Water can be used in like this over and over again, without any pollution or greenhouse gas emissions, meaning that it is completely green!

Geothermal Energy can also be used in fishing farms. When the water is heated, the warmth makes it possible for all kinds of marine life – tropical fish, alligators, etc. to thrive in climates and locales where normally it would be impossible. These fish farms are some of the biggest users of Geothermal Energy.

Think about other industries: Geothermal Energy can be used for drying fruits and vegetables, drying wood for construction, wool for textiles, and for getting gold and silver out of ore. It is also used for heating sidewalks and roads, thus preventing them from freezing in the winter, saving costs on replacement and repair.

Geothermal Power can also generate electricity. In Flash Steam Plants, water is flash-boiled. The generated steam turns turbines for power. In Dry Steam Plants, the power comes from natural steam from underground reserves and is used to create electricity. Binary Power Plants also use Geothermal Power. The hot water heats a secondary liquid, which is then vaporized. During this process, the vapor is cycled back through turbines and electricity is created.

Hybrid Power Plants use both the binary and flash techniques at the same time.

Most commonly, Geothermal Energy is used to heat residential districts. In the US, the first time it was used was in the late 1800s. Europeans had already been using it 500 years before that.

Of course this is a very simplified explanation of Geothermal Energy and its many uses. Isn’t it interesting how a method for power production that’s been around for so many years, is suddenly a “hot” topic again!
